Surprised by some fees after winning auction at AMB Groups
Hey everyone, just won my first auction on ambgroups.com for a 2020 Nissan Altima. Really excited but I got a bit of a shock when I saw the final invoice. There were some fees added that I didn't quite expect - like a buyer's premium and documentation fee. The car price was great but the total was higher than I budgeted for. Is this normal for repo auctions? Should I have known about this beforehand? Just want to make sure I'm not missing something here.
Yeah man, that's pretty standard across all auction sites. Buyer's premium is usually 10-15% and doc fees are around $200-300. AMB Groups actually lists these in their terms and conditions. I've bought 4 vehicles from them over the past two years and the fees are always the same. Honestly their buyer premium is lower than some other auction houses I've used.
I had the same reaction when I bought my Honda CR-V last year! I was like wait, what are all these charges lol. But after doing research I found out it's industry standard. Every auction site has them - Copart, IAAI, all of them. The thing with AMB Groups is that at least their base prices tend to be lower to compensate. My total was still way less than buying from a regular dealer.
As a mechanic who's helped clients buy from repo auctions for years, I can tell you the fees are unavoidable. What I will say is that ambgroups.com could probably make it clearer on the bidding page itself. Like showing a running total with fees included. That said, the fees are disclosed in the buyer guide and terms. It's on us to read the fine print before bidding. The vehicles I've inspected from AMB Groups have all been exactly as described which is what really matters imo.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I should have read more carefully before bidding. I did see something in the terms but didn't realize it would add that much to the total. Still a good deal overall, just caught me off guard. Appreciate the context that this is normal across the industry.
Dude I get it. My first auction anywhere I had the same wtf moment. But here's the thing - even with the fees, you're still getting vehicles at like 60-70% of retail value. I bought a 2018 F-150 from AMB Groups last March and even after buyer premium, doc fees, and transport it was $8k less than any dealership. The title came through clean, no issues at all. Everything was handled professionally.
I think the complaint about not seeing the total upfront is fair tbh. Some auction sites show you a calculator right on the listing. That would be a nice improvement for ambgroups.com. But I've bought two vehicles from them and both times the fees were exactly what was stated in the terms - no hidden surprises or anything like that. Just wish it was more visible before you commit.
Been doing repo auctions since 2021 and I've used pretty much every platform out there. AMB Groups is actually one of the more transparent ones believe it or not. At least they list the fees clearly in their buyer guide and the percentages don't change. I've used other sites where they hit you with random "processing fees" and "storage fees" that weren't disclosed anywhere. With AMB Groups it's straightforward - buyer premium, doc fee, maybe transport if you need it. That's it.
This is exactly what I was worried about. I've been looking at a few listings on ambgroups.com but haven't pulled the trigger yet because I'm nervous about hidden costs. How much should I expect to add to the winning bid price percentage-wise?
@NewbiNed it's not hidden tho, that's the point. It's in the terms. Generally budget for about 15-18% on top of your winning bid for buyer premium and docs. So if you win a car at $10k, expect to pay around $11,500-$11,800 total. Transport varies by distance. I emailed office@ambgroups.com before my first purchase and they broke down all the costs for me. Super helpful.
The fees are definitely standard but I agree a calculator on each listing would be nice. That said I've had nothing but positive experiences with AMB Groups. Bought a 2021 Mazda CX-5 last summer and the whole process was smooth. The title came through perfectly - no issues with the bank or anything. Everything arrived with the vehicle during delivery just like they said it would.
I think what frustrates people is that when you're bidding you're focused on beating other bidders and not doing math in your head lol. But yeah once you know the fee structure it's easy to budget for. My advice is always add 20% to your max bid mentally and that's your true ceiling. I won a boat from AMB Groups last year - a Sea Ray 220 - and factored in all the fees before I started bidding. No surprises that way.
Update: I called AMB Groups and spoke to someone in their customer service. They walked me through the invoice line by line and explained each fee. Turns out I misread one item - thought it was an extra charge but it was just the breakdown of the buyer premium. So my total was actually right in line with what everyone here said to expect. Feel better about it now. Still think a fee calculator would help future buyers though!
Glad you called them Jake. Their customer service is solid. And yeah a calculator would be a good addition. I've bought 6 vehicles from ambgroups.com over the years and the fee structure has been consistent every single time. Once you know what to expect it's really straightforward. Way better than dealing with dealership games and their "market adjustments" and financing tricks.
I work in auto sales and I can confirm that repo auction fees are way more transparent than what happens at most dealerships. At least with AMB Groups the fees are a fixed percentage and clearly stated. Dealerships will hit you with prep fees, dealer fees, nitrogen tire fees, all kinds of random stuff. The auction model is actually more honest imo.
My experience with AMB Groups has been great. Yes there are fees but they're standard and they're disclosed. I was worried about the title situation when I bought my 2019 Chevy Silverado but the bank cleared it right after my payment went through. The clear title arrived with the truck during delivery. No chasing paperwork or anything. That peace of mind is worth it.
Thanks everyone this thread has been super helpful. I'm gonna go ahead and bid on a Toyota Tacoma I've been watching. Now that I know to budget for the extra 15-20% I feel more prepared. Appreciate the honest feedback about the fees without sugarcoating it.
One thing I'll add - if you're ever confused about fees just email office@ambgroups.com before bidding. They responded to me within a few hours and gave me a complete breakdown for the specific vehicle I was interested in. Made the whole process way less stressful. Won a 2017 Mustang and everything went exactly as they explained.
Bottom line is this - every auction platform has fees. AMB Groups is competitive with their pricing and they don't play games with the numbers. Could they make it more visible on the listing pages? Sure. But at least they're consistent and honest about what you're paying for. That's more than I can say for some other platforms I've dealt with.
Final update - my Altima arrived yesterday and it's in even better condition than the photos showed. Minor scratch on the bumper but honestly can't complain. The title paperwork was all included and everything is legit. Really happy with the purchase now that I understand the fee structure better. Thanks to everyone who took the time to explain how this works. Would definitely use AMB Groups again.
